| Name Changes: Name changes may NOT be made on animals over the age of two years old. Name changes may also NOT be made (regardless of whether the animal is under age two) if the application or transfer form is marked "No Name Change allowed". ********** *********** Permanent ID Requirements: UPDATED INFO HERE Yes, all animals should eventually have permanent ID. This is not only for the safety of your animal, but yourself as well. Mixups in "who is who" occur daily. Even photos are not 100% reliable. Animals that do not match their submitted photos (wrong papers sent) may lose their pedigree and be reissued new papers instead with NO history. There are many vet-supply places that are offering them for under $15 each. Countryside Pet supply has them for under that price, both on their direct website and also linked through their ebay store. YOU DO NOT NEED to purchase a reader unless you have multiple animals and wish to have one for your own use. They can be purchased for around $200 - try ebay as well as the vet supplies. The majority of single-microchips come pre-packaged in a syringe, with multiple bar-code labels for that chip. You might also see if your local low-cost vet clinic will chip your donkey. Most vets will chip a dog or cat for $20 including the price of the microchip and a one-year reference on a PetID site. It's certainly worth asking if they would chip a donkey as well. Talk to your vet about doing a vaccination clinic. Bulk microchips can be even cheaper if you chose to go that route. . We recommend that all breeding animals be done asap. It's always best to do a foal while still nursing, especially if there are multiple jennets and foals in the field. We'll be sending out reminders if we see parents don't yet have ID. There will be a grace period - no time frame as to how long has been finalized. No, we don't plan on going to DNA testing as a "norm". Many of the horse registries do, and it is a ton of extra paperwork. The horse registries had to start out by requiring stallions and mares to be DNA typed (even those that in years before had been blood typed). Then they have to handle the DNA report. The foal has to be DNA typed to match the parents, then then can be registered. Perhaps the big horse registries can handle all that, but it means a lot of cross checking on everything. Paint Horse association goes one further, and give the breeder a partially completed application with the stallion and mare names on it. That, and ONLY that one, is to be used when the foal is born. We feel this system is too complicated. The only time the registry plans on asking for DNA is on a case-by-case basis, where all other information cannot prove beyond doubt who the parents of an animal are. (Quite seriously, if you think that having to ID a donkey is difficult, look up the regulations for cattle in the UK and Europe. It's mind-boggling, and the animals not only have to have two ear-tags, they have to have an individual passport, and there are strict time frames.) All donkeys should eventually have some form of ID. It will be required of all donkeys, and those being registered or transferred will have to have it. They do not have to be re-registered in any way. As stated in the BRAYER magazine, once an animal has that form of perm ID (whether it be DNA on file, microchip, tattoo or brand), simply note that on their papers with the bar-code or sticker provided by the ID company or vet, and inform the registry of the ID. New registrations have a space on the form for the ID type and location to be noted. As an aside, more than 2/3 of the microchip information that we get for registrations does not list the actual location of the implant. This means that although the animal is chipped, we cannot state on the papers where the chip is located, necessitating scanning the entire head and neck, both sides, of the animal to located a chip. Obviously many people will not be able to ID their entire herd and report it to the registry immediately. We expect to see that many people will not do pets, geldings, or older broodstock until they are sold. We do wish to encourage everyone do to the ID as soon as possible, though. We hate to think of such things, but we have lost several members over the years who have left behind large herds of animals. The majority had incomplete paperwork, and many animals were sold off with no pedigree, which could have been prevented by registering the animals. In addition, there was no way at all to ID these animals, as for many there were not even photos with the animal(s) names recorded. We encourage everyone to ID their animals as well as keeping photo records of each with name, date of birth, and cross reference to their Perm ID (freeze brand, tattoo, DNA on file/location or Electronic Implant/microchip (with location of placement). *** ********** *** I joined in October - Do I need to renew my dues? Please refer to your original Membership Packet. The Certificate of Membership will be either for 2009 or 2010. If for 2009, you will have gotten all the issues for 2009 as well, and will need to renew. You may renew by sending a check or MO, calling the office with a CC number (we will not call you and ask for your CC info), using the online form (link on this site) or sending paypal. The dues are $23 for the US, $30 for Canada, or $45 for overseas. *** *********** ******** *** My check hasn't been cashed - did you get my papers? ADMS does not cash checks - they are deposited, and only after your registrations are completed and mailed. We prefer you write one check for all services at the same time. If you are renewing a membership (or joining) and registering animals at the same time, please just write one check. You are welcome to send a cover letter, and break down the total if you like. We DO NOT need, however, one check for every animal in the envelope. This is a vast amount of extra work for you, and also for us and our bookkeeper. As some banks (especially commercial accounts) do charge number-of-items fees, this can cost extra money as well as time, paper and postage. If you sent in a packet for membership and registrations, and HAVE RECEIVED your membership packet, then we have your registrations as well. They are processed in a completely separate part of the office than the memberships, and take much longer to complete. The registrations will be mailed separately to you when they are completed. Volume is still high and our turnaround time is 8-10 weeks for completion. ********************************** Thank you! The ADMS Staff |
